Local Information
Food on Campus
The food options closest to the meeting rooms are probably:
- • Harvest which is across the street (on east mall) from the Buchanan Tower;
- • "The Nest" (aka the student union building) which has lots of fast-food, student oriented type places.
- • The latter also has The Gallery, Patio & Lounge, which has beer in addition to food, and when the weather is nice, a good place to sit outside on the patio.
- • The Great Dane, which besides coffee has sandwiches and soup.
- • Loafe (in the bottom of the alumni building): which has coffee and some food, plus some beer options.
- • Ike’s Café, which is inside the IKE Barber library (coffee and snacks).
Just a few minutes more walk, and you can get to University Boulevard, which has a number of places to eat:
- • University Central Food Court
- Brown’s Crafthouse has beer and burgers, etc.
- (Note: JamJar is now closed.)
More dining options
- • If you’re looking for something fancy, a bit further (just off campus, but still walkable if you have the time): Wildlight Kitchen and Bar
- • A bit further away (but still walkable) is the University Village, which has some more food options (again, mostly fast good type places).
- • And about a 25 min walk from the conference meeting rooms is Wesbrook Village, which has a grocery store, plus some places to eat (including a nice café: Doughgirls; a good pizza place: Nicli and a sports bar: Sports Illustrated).
- • There are many other places for food scattered about the UBC campus. See UBC Feed Me Now, and Where to Eat Map

Length
You should plan on having minutes presentation time. We suppose this to be the principal guide in judging the length of the paper you send. It is the norm at SEP meetings for speakers to present rather than read their papers (and this is a virtue), so it is to be expected that presentation time and page length will only loosely correlate.
That said, do please bear in mind that paper referees need to both grasp the content of your paper and be able to readily envisage how you could present it in the available time. So, if your paper runs long, you might for this reason want to prepare a shortened version.
Getting There
UC Davis is located approximately 20 minutes away from the Sacramento Airport (SMF).
There is a bus directly from the airport to campus; it is Yolobus numbers 42A and 42B.
There is also a shuttle service called Davis Airporter.
An Uber or Lyft ride is generally around $25.
Additional Information
• Botanical Gardens
- Those who wish to walk to the Botanical Gardens for the excursion can meet at the Buchanan Penthouse at 2 p.m. and Chris Stephens will walk with you.
- Walking Directions to the UBC Botanical Gardens
• The Galley Patio and Grill at the Jericho Sailing Centre (banquet venue)
- It’s a bit of a hike (a little over an hour if you’re walking) to the Jericho Sailing Club from the UBC Campus so we propose catching a bus from the UBC Bus Loop or taking a Lyft/Uber.
- By bus: This map provides you with a few bus options leaving from the main UBC Bus Loop, getting you there by 5:30pm.
- Uber and Lyft are available with a designated pick up area right in front of West Coast Suites. Map of designated Uber and Lyft "ride hail spots".
Local Setting
The University of Calgary is located in the north-west quadrant of Calgary, about 7km from downtown. The areas of the city surrounding it are mainly residential. Although there are food options on campus, there are few amenities within walking distance of the campus. There is a train station on campus, which will take you downtown in about 15 minutes.
Travel Information
Please note that international travellers may now require an Electronic Travel Authorization prior to entering Canada.
Below are some links to travel and tourism information on Calgary and Alberta. Note that Calgary is located about 1.5 hours east of the Rocky Mountains and Banff National Park. The mountains can be reached by rental car or shuttle from Calgary International Airport, or Greyhound from downtown Calgary.
Transport & Parking
From the Airport: A Taxi will cost approximately $90 from LAX, and $50 from Bob Hope Airport in Burtbank. There are two shuttle companies that run out of each airport: Prime Time and Super Shuttle. The fare is $30 + $9/additional person from LAX, and $23 + $9/additional person from Bob Hope. It is possible, but slow, to travel by Metro. Consult www.metro.net. >From LAX, the FlyAway bus goes to Union Station in downtown Los Angeles (see below).
From Downtown: The Gold Line light rail system runs from Union Station downtown to Pasadena. The Del Mar station is 3 blocks west of the Pasadena Hilton. The Memorial Park station is 2 blocks from Colorado Blvd. and several bus lines that serve Pasadena: 180, 267, and the Pasadena ARTS 10 (does not run on Sunday). On weekdays, the 485 express bus runs from Union Station to Pasadena.
Parking on campus: On Sunday, you can park in any space for free. On Monday and Tuesday, park in the North Wilson parking structure -- building 123 on the campus map (www.caltech.edu/map). You can park in any unmarked space. Parking costs $6/day, and there is a pay station on the second floor.
Information for Speakers & Poster Presenters
Talks: Sessions are one hour, including Q&A, so you should plan to speak for 40 minutes or less.
Posters: Poster presenters will each have a space on a bulletin board approximately 36 inches (90 cm) high and 40 inches (100cm) wide. Plenty of push pins will be provided. You may use your space however you wish. The goal is to convey information about the research, but also to lure people into discussion about the work.
